1892-1962. US physicist known for his work on
X-rays. Working at Chicago 1923 he found that
X-rays scattered by such light elements as
carbon increased their wavelengths. Compton
concluded from this unexpected result that
the X-rays were displaying both wave-like and
particle-like properties, since named the
Compton effect. He shared the 1927 Nobel
prize with Charles Wilson.
